A two-sport letterwinner in the late 1950s, the late Leon “Tex” Collier played both football and basketball at FAMU. An honors graduate, Collier played tackle on the football team, starting on the undefeated 1959 national championship team.
In basketball, Collier served as team captain, helping lead FAMU to back-to-back Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles in 1957 and 1958. In 1957, he captured All-SIAC Tournament honors, helping the Rattlers and undefeated regular season (25-0), and to their first-ever postseason appearance in the NCAA Division Two regionals, finishing the
season, 26-1.
