His influence was crucial to uniting the School of General Studies and Athletics to provide an effective academic counseling and support program for student-athletes. An avid supporter of Athletics, Dr. Ammons leads by example, attending countless university sports activities; working closely with the Director of Athletics, athletic administration and coaches providing leadership and financial support; providing moral support to the teams through in-person pep talks throughout the school year.

He is also an active participant in the MEAC Council of Presidents, with the NCAA, and has worked to further raise the national profile of Athletics through direct talks with media giant
ESPN. Dr. Ammons has been and remains deeply committed to Athletics, taking a great interest in the success of the program in all aspects, providing singular leadership and support in his position as University President.
