One of only two freshmen to crack the starting lineup in baseball under the legendary Costa "Pop" Kittles, Alfred "Al" Washington blossomed into a standout performer for FloridaA &M.
In 1965, Washington broke into the lineup as a freshman infielder and by 1966, had become a clutch performer. Against national power University of Miami in 1966, Washington scored the Rattlers' only two runs in a 2-0 triumph, drawing two walks and stealing two bases in that game.

As a senior in 1969, Washington won FAMU's Golden Glove Award, as the deft fielder made just three errors in a remarkable season for the Rattlers. He also led the team in run scored, stolen bases and walks drawn. That 1969 club posted a 29-5 record overall, captured the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, soared to a number nine (#9) national ranking, while earning a berth to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championship playoffs.

Washington had a lifetime .294 batting average at Florida A&M, finishing his collegiate career with the fewest strikeouts for any F AMU player in a four-year career.
