TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Oct. 10) - The Florida A&M University Volleyball
team picked up their fourth consecutive win of the season as they
defeated North Carolina Central University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21)
here Sunday afternoon at the Alfred Lawson, Jr., Multipurpose Center and
Teaching Gymnasium.
FAMU (4-11) finished the match with a .200
hitting percentage, by tallying 38 kills in 95 total attacks with 19
errors, while the Lady Rattler defense held NCCU (6-19) to .098 hitting
percentage with 33 kills in 102 total attacks with 23 errors.
The
Lady Rattlers were led by
Bianca Rucker with 13 kills, behind her was
Katherine Huanec with eight. Both
Maria Ceccarelli and
Pamela Barrera
finished with seven kills each. Diana Gonzalez led the team in assists
with a game high 35 and
Susan Egoavil led the team in digs with 16.
In
the first set, Barrera tied the set at 10-10. The Lady Rattlers would
then take a 17-12 lead as they outscored the Lady Eagles 7-2, capped off
by a Ceccarelli kill. NCCU would cut FAMU's lead to 22-18 on a Belinda
Behncke-Biney kill. The Lady Rattlers would then pull away for the
25-20 win in the first set.
FAMU jumped out to a 19-11 lead in the second set capped off by Huanec kill.
The
Lady Eagles then outscored the Lady Rattlers 6-3 to cut FAMU's lead to
22-17. NCCU then made the score 24-22 in favor of FAMU on a Tasha –Gaye
Richards kill.
FAMU would win the set 25-22 on a Ceccarelli kill.
The Lady Rattlers built a 10-5 lead in the third set on a Lady Eagle error.
NCCU
would come soaring back as they tied the set at 15-15 on a Sashalee
Wallen kill, capping a 10-5 run. The Lady Eagles cut the Lady Rattlers'
lead to 22-21 on FAMU attack error, followed by a Raven King service
ace.
FAMU would then rattle off the next three points for the
25-21 win on a Lady Eagle ball handling error, a Rucker kill and an
another NCCU attack error.
Behncke-Biney led the Lady Eagles with
kills with 11, followed by both Wallen and Martisann Sinclair, who
finished with six kills apiece. Jzima-Malaki Kalao led the NCCU in
assists with 27 and Raven King finished with a team high 11 digs.
The
Lady Rattlers will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 13 as they will
travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., to take on arch rival Bethune-Cookman
University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup in a 6:30 p.m.
