Florida A&M Volleyball Preview: Rattlers Set to Strike in Jacksonville

9/17/2025 2:10:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Rattlers head to Jacksonville this week for a three-match test that will put their grit and blocking power on full display. With a defense ranked among the nation's best and a frontline anchored by Farah Farooq, FAMU is ready to make the most of this opportunity against high-level competition.

Thursday, Sept. 18 – vs. West Virginia (3:30 p.m. EST)
The Rattlers open the Jacksonville Tournament against West Virginia, a Big 12 foe known for its high-tempo offense. FAMU's 2.94 blocks per set—best in the SWAC and Top 15 nationally—will be the difference-maker. If the Rattlers can establish their blocking wall early, they'll make life tough on WVU's attackers and create transition scoring chances.

Friday, Sept. 19 – vs. Jacksonville State (3:30 p.m. EST)
Day two brings Jacksonville State, a strong mid-major with balance across the board. But FAMU has the firepower to counter. With Farooq hitting an efficient .362 (2nd in the SWAC) and steady production from attackers like LaDonna Trantham and Iyonnie Sanford, the Rattlers can spread the floor and keep JSU scrambling. Look for FAMU's serve game—where they rank 3rd in the SWAC in total aces—to put pressure on the Gamecocks' back row.

Saturday, Sept. 20 – vs. Jacksonville (3:30 p.m. EST)
The tournament finale comes against host Jacksonville University, and the Rattlers will be eager to close strong. FAMU's defense has been a steady force all season, holding opponents to a .157 hitting percentage (2nd in the SWAC, Top 40 nationally). If the Rattlers dig in and control the net, they'll have the chance to finish the weekend on a high note and carry momentum into conference play.

Why FAMU is Ready to Shine
  • Blocking Power: #1 in the SWAC, Top 15 nationally.
  • Defensive Toughness: Opponents hitting just .157 against them.
  • Star Power: Farooq is a two-way standout—efficient hitter and elite blocker.
  • Momentum Builders: Trantham, Sanford, and others adding depth to the attack.
