For over 15 years Bahamas native, Rodney Carey, has been playing tennis. Now beginning his second year at Florida A&M University, Carey aspires to take his endeavors to a professional level. “This year Coach Carl Goodman is allowing me to take part in several professional tournaments, such as, Futures and Challengers tennis tournaments,” Carey said.
Carey has traveled and toured five continents and visited over 20 countries, including North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Europe and played in almost every country in the Caribbean. His favorite countries include South Africa, Italy, France, Thailand and India. Carey says he enjoys traveling because he has the opportunity to meet new people, learn different cultures, and learn a few words in different languages. One of his memorable moments, he said, was on his trip to India. “While visiting India there were bomb threats and myself along with teammates and other players were told to stay indoors.”
Carey has been a top-seated player in his region for over 10 years. The peak in his career during his final years as a junior came in 2010 when he was seated number 130 in the world. Carey was also ranked number one in the Bahamas for most of his junior career.
In 2007 Carey moved from the Bahamas and became a student of the Bill Adams Tennis Academy in Pembroke Pines Florida. He was later recruited and played for the University of Wisconsin in 2010 before coming to FAMU in 2012. Carey is currently majoring in sociology and will be a key player in the upcoming tennis season.
