LEXINGTON, Ky.
–The Florida A&M University men's
indoor track team fared well at the University of Kentucky Track
Invitational this weekend at the Nutter Fieldhouse. Competing against
major colleges from top conferences, the Rattlers fared well, earning
nine MEAC Indoor Championship qualifiers.
The field was stocked
with teams ready to kick off the 2011 schedule, which included the
University of Kentucky, University of Alabama, Louisville, Georgia
Tech., University of Tennessee and several others.
FAMU long
jumper
Leon Hunt, had the most impressive showing, placing second in the
long jump with a leap of 24'9" in the finals. Hunt has been steadily
improving and this performance should catapult his season into
conference competition.
Sprinter/hurdler
Brandon Hartley pulled
out a seventh place finish in the prelimenaries of the 60m hurdles with a
time of 8.20 seconds. Demarius Carroll would also run a blazing 8.26
time in the 60m hurdles and finish seventh in the finals.
The
men's 4x400m relay team of
Brandon Hartley,
Derrick Morgan, Shelton
Tarver and
Malcolm Moore, finished seventh place overall.

Angel's quotes "I knew coming in, it was going to be really tough and
wanted to find out how they would do against nationwide competition. It
was not disappointing at all. We were perfect the first day with MEAC
(championship) qualifiers. Evander Wilson, who also plays football and
Johnathan Melton each qualified. Willie Johnson also qualified as a high
jumper. In all, we had nine MEAC (championship) qualifiers at the
meet. We must sustain our momentum week to week, and we're looking
forward to the MEAC competition."
