GREENSBORO, NC (Feb.8) – The 102 free throws taken in Saturday night's game is the story of the game. The North Carolina A&T Aggies (8-16, 4-5MEAC) set five all-time school records and in essence propelled them to a 84-78 win over the Rattlers (8-15, 4-6 MEAC). Behind Lamont Middleton's 35 points, the Aggies capitalized off of FAMU's 39 called fouls and went on to victory at the Corbett Sports Center on the campus of NC A&T.
The Rattlers were led in scoring by Jamie Adams, who led five players in double-figures with 14 points. Jamari Bradshaw and Reggie Lewis each scored 13 points, while Trey Kellum added 12 and Bobby King chipped in 11 points.
FAMU head coach Clemon Johnson tried to get the attention of the referees, with a seemingly calculated technical foul in the first half. “I took a technical foul already for the team, now I can't get another one. We cant control the way they are calling the game, we must go out and play Rattler basketball and eliminate the simple mistakes,” Johnson told his team at halftime.
The Rattlers shot 39 free throws in the game, while the Aggies shot 33 in the first half and another 30 in the second half, for the 63 attempts.
NCA&T set records for individual free throw attempts in a game (Middleton-21), individual free throws made in a game (Middleton-18), total team free throw attempts (63), total team made free throws (44) and total free throws in a game (102).
Kellum pulled down nine rebounds, while King and Willie Connor grabbed six rebounds each. Adams led the team with four assists.
For the Aggies, Richaud Pack scored 20 points, while Jeremy Underwood added 14. Pack would add 12 rebounds for a double-double.
The Rattlers will travel to Durham, NC to face the Eagles of NCCU on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
