TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida A&M football begins conference action Saturday night when the Rattlers (1-3) meet Alabama A&M (3-1) at 7 p.m. in a matchup airing live on SWAC TV.

The Rattlers bring one of the most disruptive defensive fronts in the conference into the contest. FAMU leads the SWAC with 14 sacks for 78 yards lost and holds opponents to a league-best 27.0 percent conversion rate on third down, a combination that has made life difficult for opposing offenses when drives reach the money downs.

THE PASS RUSH SETS THE TONE
FAMU's defensive front has been the story of the season. Antonio Camon leads the way with 3.0 sacks and 5.0 tackles for loss, while Paul Gatley and Isaiah Morrison have each added 2.0 sacks. Omari Kinsler and DJ Jones have chipped in 1.5 sacks apiece, and Terrell James and Adeon Farmer have each posted 3.0 tackles for loss. As a unit, the Rattlers have recorded 26.0 tackles for loss on the season.

That pressure will be tested by an Alabama A&M offense that has allowed only four sacks through four games, setting up a head-to-head battle in the trenches that could decide the night.

JOHNSON ANCHORS A BALL-HAWKING DEFENSE
Linebacker Denzel Johnson has been an anchor for FAMU through the first four games, leading the team with 28 tackles (14 solo) to go along with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a blocked kick and a pass breakup. Justin Bostic has come up with two interceptions, and FAMU has made its takeaways count, averaging 44.5 yards per interception return with one pick-six.

The Rattlers have also recovered three fumbles for 72 return yards.

FAMU's defense has been at its best when its back is against the wall. The Rattlers rank third in the SWAC in red zone defense (68.8 percent), and opponents are just 1-of-3 on field goal attempts against FAMU, with two of those tries blocked.

A SPECIAL TEAMS EDGE
Few units in the conference can match FAMU's special teams. Behind punter Bobby Engstler, the Rattlers lead the SWAC in both gross (40.6) and net punting (39.8), and opponents have managed just 26 return yards on 32 FAMU punts. On the season, Engstler has punted 31 times for 1,258 yards, dropping nine inside the 20, forcing 14 fair catches and booming four kicks of 50-plus yards.

The kicking game has been flawless as well. FAMU is a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals, with Emilio Bacardi going 3-for-3 and Gabriel Cason connecting on a 37-yarder. Bacardi has also averaged 62.3 yards per kickoff with eight touchbacks. Three different Rattlers, Johnson, Andre Powell Jr. and Anthony Baxter, have blocked kicks this season.

The return game could have room to work Saturday: Alabama A&M ranks last in the SWAC in kickoff coverage with a net average of 37.2 yards.

OFFENSIVE WEAPONS
Armond Parker has provided a spark under center, completing 17 of 32 passes (53.1 percent) for 304 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in two appearances. His 147.3 passer rating leads the team, he is averaging 152.0 passing yards per game, and he has connected on a long of 80 yards. Parker has also added 11 rushing yards on three carries.

Dustin Fletcher has seen action in all four games, completing 20 of 38 passes (52.6 percent) for 149 yards and a touchdown without an interception, good for a 94.3 passer rating and a long completion of 38 yards. Fletcher has also been a factor with his legs, gaining 98 yards on 20 carries (60 net) with a long run of 15.

Jaquan Lee has been FAMU's big-play threat in the passing game, averaging 16.8 yards per catch with 151 receiving yards, two touchdowns and an 80-yard long. Corey Petty leads the team with 11 receptions, Maliek Denmark is averaging 24.5 yards per catch, and Kieren Jackson has added 88 yards on six grabs. On the ground, Chase Gillespie leads the Rattlers with 94 rushing yards and a touchdown, including a 35-yard run.
FAMU has protected the football through the air, throwing just one interception in 118 attempts, and has been efficient once inside the 20, scoring on eight of nine red zone trips. The Rattlers have also been among the more disciplined teams in the league, averaging 58.8 penalty yards per game compared to Alabama A&M's 76.0.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Alabama A&M enters with a 3-1 record and one of the SWAC's most productive offenses, averaging 34.3 points and 466.5 yards per game. Quarterback Cornelious Brown IV has completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 1,111 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions, while adding two rushing scores. Jarel Williams (23 catches, 358 yards, 3 TD) and Jordan Chambers-Smith (16 catches, 246 yards, 3 TD) are his top targets. Kolton Nero leads the ground game with 183 yards and three touchdowns, and Troy Bruce is averaging 9.0 yards per carry.

Defensively, the Bulldogs lead the SWAC in scoring defense at 15.0 points per game. Jeremiah Hudson-Davis paces the unit with 39 tackles, and Kylon Roberts has 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Alabama A&M has converted 53.5 percent of its third downs, setting up a key matchup against a FAMU defense that has been the SWAC's best on third down.

KEYS FOR THE RATTLERS
Get home on the quarterback. FAMU's league-leading pass rush has to push Brown IV off his spot and win on third down, where the Rattlers have been the conference's stingiest unit.

Win the hidden yardage. With the SWAC's top punting unit and a perfect kicking game, FAMU can control field position against a Bulldogs team that ranks last in kickoff coverage.

Take care of the football and finish drives. The Rattlers have thrown only one interception all season and have come away with points on nearly every red zone trip. Keeping that up will be critical against a strong scoring defense.

ENGSTLER AND JOHNSON EARN SWAC WEEKLY HONORS
Two Rattlers were recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Monday, as Bobby Engstler was named SWAC Special Teams Player of the Week and Denzel Johnson was tabbed SWAC Defensive Player of the Week. It marks the first weekly honor of the season for both players.

Engstler, a 6-foot, 204-pound sophomore from Tallahassee and a transfer from Arkansas State, punted six times for 257 yards against Tennessee State, placing three inside the 20 with a long of 57 yards. The Chiles Academy graduate's ability to flip the field has consistently given the FAMU defense room to work.

Johnson, a 5-foot-11, 215-pound junior linebacker from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., led the Orange and Green with a season-high 12 tackles (seven solo) in a hard-fought game against the Tigers. The former Alabama State standout enters SWAC play ranked among the conference's top 10 in tackles.
