A HOMECOMING FOR GRAY
Saturday is a return trip for head coach Quinn Gray, who began his college coaching career as Alcorn State's quarterbacks coach in 2020. This week, Chris Cash, who also coaches FAMU's safeties and nickels, takes over as the Rattlers' interim defensive coordinator.
RATTLERS TO WATCH
QB Armond Parker. Parker has thrown for 1,507 yards and 12 touchdowns in seven games (215.3 per game) and has three rushing scores. FAMU ranks fifth in the SWAC in passing offense at 217.7 yards per game.
WR Corey Petty. Petty leads FAMU with 29 catches, 371 receiving yards and three touchdown catches. He has 14 catches for 203 yards and two scores over the last two games.
WR Armand Burris. Burris averages 23.8 yards per catch (13 for 309) and holds the season's top receiving game, 216 yards with two touchdowns at Alabama State.
WR Kieren Jackson. Jackson leads the team with 695 all-purpose yards (77.2 per game), including 299 receiving yards and 22.0 yards per kickoff return.
RB Jamal Hailey. Hailey leads FAMU with 283 rushing yards and had the Rattlers' first 100-yard rushing game of the season at Jackson State, highlighted by an 81-yard touchdown run.
The defense. Denzel Johnson leads the team with 55 tackles,
Justin Bostic has three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), and
Antonio Camon has 6.0 tackles for loss.
Jaiden Roper has 19 tackles over the last two games. FAMU is tied for second in the SWAC with seven fumble recoveries.
Special teams. FAMU leads the SWAC in net punting (39.8).
Bobby Engstler averages 41.1 yards on 55 punts with 18 downed inside the 20, and the Rattlers are 8-of-10 on field goals (.800, tied for third in the SWAC).
SCOUTING ALCORN STATE
Alcorn State is 5-4 in its third season under head coach Cedric Thomas. The Braves are unbeaten in Lorman, with wins over Miles (56-7), Texas Southern (43-40 in overtime) and Arkansas Baptist (63-7), and they beat UAPB 53-51 in double overtime in Memphis.
Quarterback Jaylon Tolbert drives the SWAC's top offense. He has completed 187-of-288 passes for 2,681 yards and 27 touchdowns with eight interceptions, and he has run for 269 yards. Running back Fredrick Robertson has 582 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns, Armon Wright leads with 37 catches and 959 all-purpose yards, and Tyree Kelly averages 18.3 yards per catch with five touchdowns. Alcorn leads the conference in scoring, total offense (480.9), passing offense (303.9) and first downs, and it converts 48.8 percent of its third downs.
The Braves allow 34.8 points and 407.7 yards per game. Timothy Jasper leads with 65 tackles, Mahamadou Diarra has 8.5 tackles for loss and Elijah Ruffin has three interceptions. Kenyon Bowyer is 7-of-9 on field goals.
KEYS TO THE GAME
1. Keep pace through the air. Alcorn ranks eighth in the SWAC in pass defense (219.3 yards per game). Parker, Petty, Burris and Jackson give FAMU the playmakers to turn this into a shootout the Rattlers can win.
2. Get off the field on third down. The Braves convert nearly half of their third downs. Forcing punts, and making Alcorn drive the length of the field, keeps Tolbert and company off the scoreboard.
3. Win the hidden yards. FAMU leads the SWAC in net punting and is tied for third in field goal percentage. Alcorn is ninth in both net punting and field goal percentage and 11th in penalty yards (80.3 per game).
4. Protect the football. Two interceptions, including the 98-yard return, turned the Southern game. A clean day like FAMU's zero-turnover effort against UAPB gives the Rattlers a real chance in a game where every possession counts.
