NORFOLK, Va. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced the 2017 Volleyball All-Academic Selections, honoring 66 student-athletes from the conference's 13 institutions who achieved academic success during the 2016-17 academic year.
MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year, are eligible for All-Academic accolades.
FAMU interim head coach, Edwin Pata, feels that the honor represents progress in the department's academic focus. "It says a lot about the seriousnes of our guys and the balance attributed to their academics. Football is strenuous as you have to balance workouts, practice, study and maintain some sort of social life. This type of honor underscores that our priorities are aligned. Education is number one. We come to FAMU first and foremost get an education. We are seeing that in the kids we bring in. No matter what our rate of success is on the field, we can always look forward to having success on the academic side," Pata said.
“I felicitate our football student-athletes for maintaining a 3.0 or better grade point average,” said MEAC Commissioner Dr. Dennis E. Thomas. “I would also like to recognize the academic support staff, faculty, parents and coaches who have contributed to the academic and athletic success of these student-athletes.”
