S.C. State Rides Second Half Surge Past FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Dec. 5) – South Carolina State rode a torrid second half shooting performance past the FAMU Men's Basketball team, 79-67 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday evening in The Al Lawson Center.

The Rattlers (3-6, 0-1 in MEAC) led at the break, 35-32, as both they and the visiting Bulldogs (4-3, 1-0) shot just over 40 percent from the floor, with both clubs knocking down timely three-pointers to keep things interesting in the opening stanza.

In the second half though, the Bulldogs dialed up the heat from the field, shooting 62.1 percent while the Rattlers didn't match the visitors shooting flair, hitting 37 percent overall, despite hitting four three-pointers to remain in contention until the final minutes.

The Bulldogs cashed in nine of their 11 free throw attempts too which helped them pull way to a 47-32 second half scoring flurry to secure the victory.

Freshman Francois Lewis led FAMU with 18 points, followed by Malcolm Bernard and Treavann Warren with 12 points, and K'Ja Johnson with 11 points. Bernard led FAMU with seven rebounds.

SCSU got a game-high 21 points from Greg Mortimer and 20 points from Eric Eaves. Tashombe Riley finished with 12 points and Gabriel McCray added 11 points for the Bulldogs.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Rattlers will break for Fall Finals this week before returning to action next Saturday, Dec. 12 to host the Samford (Ala.) University Bulldogs at The Al Lawson Center at 7 p.m.
