TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 20) - The Florida A&M Softball team picked up a pair of wins today as the Lady Rattlers swept North Carolina Central 8-1 and 8-2, here Saturday afternoon at Messer Softball Complex in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader.
In game one, FAMU (14-28, 6-2 MEAC) was pace by Ashanti Shepherd as she tallied two of the Lady Rattlers' six hits.
NCCU (3-39, 2-12 MEAC) finished the contest with three hits as Emerie Germ, Markell Wylie and London German, finished with one hit each for the Lady Eagles.
Jennifer Lindsey got the win for the Lady Rattlers as she pitched seven innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out six in the 26 batters she faced. London Booker (1-24) received the loss for the Lady Eagles as she pitched five innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs and struck out six in the 30 batters she faced.
NCCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Germ homer to left field.
FAMU would tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the first as Shepherd scored on an NCCU infielder's fielding error. The Lady Rattlers added a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead as Christina Robbs scored on a Lady Eagle error.
FAMU made the score 4-2 in their favor in the bottom of the third inning as both Robbielyn Roberson and Kieifi Myrick scored on an
Alyssa Weaver single to the left side. The Lady Rattlers would plate four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the 8-1 finale.
Lady Rattlers take game two.
In game two, FAMU tallied a game-high nine hits, while NCCU finished with five. Both Shepherd and Myrick led the Lady Rattlers from the plate as they both finished with two hits each, while both Germ and Tiphani Jackson also finished with two hits each to lead the Lady Eagles.
Lindsey (8-17) got the win in game two for FAMU as she pitched three scoreless innings in relief, allowing one walk and striking out one in the nine batters she faced. Bianka Molina (1-12) received the loss for NCCU as she pitched five and two-third innings, allowing eight hits, seven earned runs and striking out three in the 31 batters she faced.
FAMU plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning as Alex Sandage scored on a
Genesis Lopez single, followed by a Robbs single down the left field line scoring Weaver, giving the Lady Rattlers a 2-0 lead.
NCCU tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning as Germ scored on a Jackson single, followed by an Angelique Perricelli sacrifice fly to left field scoring Molina.
FAMU would score six more runs as they plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and two runs in their sixth inning for the 8-2 finale.
The Lady Rattlers will return to action on Sunday, April 21 as they will conclude three-game series with North Carolina Central in a 12 p.m. start at Messer Softball Complex.
