Rattlers Complete Series Sweep of Bethune-Cookman, Improve to 10-2 in SWAC

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Florida A&M softball didn't just win a series at Bethune-Cookman — the Rattlers made it a statement weekend. FAMU swept the three-game set at Sunnyland Park, taking Games 2 and 3 on Saturday by scores of 8-2 and 6-3 to run its SWAC record to 10-2 and claim sole possession of first place in the conference. The Rattlers have now won nine of their last eleven games.

Game 2: Florida A&M 8, Bethune-Cookman 2

Samantha Smith was dominant from the circle, and her offense gave her everything she needed. Smith worked all seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one. She was in command throughout, inducing 10 groundouts and navigating every Bethune-Cookman threat with composure on her way to the complete game victory.

The Rattlers built leads methodically. Makayla Register put FAMU on top with a two-run double to left in the second, plating pinch runner Sakiya Merriex and Jordan Douglas to make it 2-0. Two innings later, with the bases loaded and one out, Braxtyn Battle launched a three-run home run to left off reliever Sofia Coleman, blowing the game wide open at 5-0. The blast was Battle's first home run of the season and came at the most pivotal moment of the game.

Amari Brown added a three-run shot of her own in the sixth, her seventh home run of the year, to push the margin to 8-0. Brown hit her homer with two outs and was hit by a pitch in her only other plate appearance of the game, further demonstrating how much opposing staffs have learned to respect her presence in the lineup.

Keeleigh Spooner went 2-for-4 with a double and Jamison Townsend added a triple as part of a nine-hit Rattler attack. FAMU improved to 18-14 overall.

Game 3: Florida A&M 6, Bethune-Cookman 3

FAMU built a five-run first inning and rode it to a series-clinching 6-3 victory in the nightcap. The Rattlers scored quickly and efficiently — a bunt single from Neriah Lee, a Battle single, a Townsend sacrifice bunt to load the corners, a Brown sacrifice fly and then a string of two-out RBIs that piled on before the Wildcats recorded a third out.

Register was the hero of the first inning and the game. With the bases loaded and two outs, she drove a two-run double to left field off reliever Aimi Tohara-Yshiki that gave FAMU a 5-0 lead before Bethune-Cookman's starter had even been lifted. The two-out double capped a five-hit, five-run first inning in which the Rattlers sent eight batters to the plate.

Register finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, building on her two-RBI game in the first contest to cap a weekend that established her as one of FAMU's most clutch contributors through the heart of SWAC play.

Zoryana Hughes started and was staked to the early lead but ran into trouble in the second inning, allowing two runs and exiting after one inning of work. Amari Brown took over in relief and was superb — going five innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three and walking one. Brown was efficient and poised throughout, working out of trouble in the middle innings to protect the FAMU lead. The effort was a showcase of Brown's two-way value to the Rattler program.

Lee had a standout game at the top of the order, going 3-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base, reaching base all four plate appearances and scoring once. She set the table on every turn through the lineup, a fitting performance for a senior who continues to lead by example. Spooner added a double and a run scored, and Brown contributed a sacrifice fly and an RBI to the offensive effort.

With the sweep, Florida A&M finishes its trip to Daytona Beach four games above its nearest SWAC competition and returns to Tallahassee at 19-14 overall, holding the best conference record in the league.
