Hughes Tosses No-Hitter and Rattlers Dominate Bulldogs in Series Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Zoryana Hughes threw a complete-game no-hitter and Jordan Douglas launched two home runs, including a bases-clearing grand slam in the first inning, as Florida A&M dominated Alabama A&M, 6-0, Thursday evening in SWAC action.

Hughes was masterful from the opening pitch, holding the Bulldogs hitless across seven innings while striking out eight and walking just one. The junior left-hander from Lake City, Fla., retired the final 13 Alabama A&M batters she faced after issuing a walk in the third inning and finished with a 0.14 WHIP for the game. She threw 104 pitches, 67 for strikes, and kept AAMU off-balance all night, inducing nine groundouts and four flyouts to back her strikeout total.

The Rattlers wasted no time establishing control. With one out in the bottom of the first, Douglas stepped into a two-and-two count against Alabama A&M starter Josefina Lacalle and crushed a grand slam to center field to give FAMU an immediate 4-0 lead. All four runs were charged as unearned, aided by a pair of fielding errors by AAMU shortstop Paula Ocrospoma earlier in the inning. The outburst capped an eight-batter first-inning rally that saw FAMU send 11 batters to the plate.

Douglas wasn't finished. Leading off the fifth inning, she sent a solo shot to center to extend the lead to 6-0, finishing the game 2-for-2 with two home runs, five RBI, and a perfect 1.000 on-base percentage.

Both of Douglas' home runs came off Lacalle, who allowed six runs — one earned — on seven hits across six innings.

Amari Brown went 2-for-4 at the plate, providing consistent production out of the cleanup spot. Samantha Smith reached twice, including a leadoff double to center field in the fifth inning, while Neriah Lee contributed a single and a two-out bunt hit in the first inning that briefly loaded the bases.

Keeleigh Spooner worked a walk in the first inning, helping set the table for the Douglas grand slam, and threw out all three Alabama A&M runners who attempted to steal, finishing behind the plate with eight putouts.

Makayla Register added a single in the third and played solid defense at first base with 10 putouts.

The victory moved FAMU to 20-14 overall and 11-2 in SWAC play, while Alabama A&M dropped to 16-20 on the season and 3-9 in conference.
