Box Score 2 MACON, Ga. (Feb. 8) | The Florida A&M softball team (0-3) continued its season-opening weekend, facing stiff competition in a 7-2 loss against Saint Joseph's and a 4-2 setback against host the Mercer.
SJU 7, FAMU 2
Saint Joseph's held a 5-0 advantage at the end of the opening inning before tacking on runs in the second and third.
The Rattlers left six runners on base, four in scoring position, highlighted by a two-out, bases-loaded situation in the final inning. A sacrifice fly by
Kayla Alexandre helped bring in their first run of the afternoon, and another by
Braxtyn Battle settled the score at 7-2 in the seventh.
Samantha Smith was credited with the loss after pitching two-thirds of an inning, and
Amari Brown provided a strong relief effort, tossing three scoreless innings that featured two strikeouts and just one hit.
MU 4, FAMU 2
The Bears held a 4-0 lead until the fifth inning when
Monroe Oglesby drove in
Braxtyn Battle with a sacrifice fly to left field. On the next at-bat, a one-out single by
Jamison Townsend loaded the bases, and the Rattlers added another run on a hit-by-pitch, before back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.
Zoryana Hughes pitched four innings in the loss, allowing four hits and four runs.
The Rattlers will wrap action in the Heart of Georgia Classic Sunday in a 1:30 p.m. game against Austin Peay.
