TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Florida A&M secured a victory over Jackson State, defeating the Tigers 76-71 at home on Saturday. Sterling Young, Milton Matthews, and Jordan Chatman led the charge, combining for 57 of the Rattlers' total points.
Young led the Rattlers (11-12, 8-4) with 28 points. Matthews tacked on 15 points and Chatman chipped in as well with 14 points and two steals.
The Florida A&M offense was strong from three-point land, pouring in nine threes on 21 attempts. Chatman hit four treys for the Rattlers in the contest.
Florida A&M's defense held Jackson State to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Tigers did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed 11 second chance points.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 12-10 advantage, Florida A&M went on an 8-0 run with 12:30 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Matthews, to increase its lead to 20-10. The Rattlers then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 40-29 advantage. Florida A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 40 points.
Following intermission, Florida A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 54-36 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Roderick Coffee Iii's layup, to grow the lead to 59-36 with 10:03 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rattlers still held on for the 76-71 win. Florida A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 24 of its 36 total points.
