TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Florida A&M women's basketball team fell to the Alcorn State Braves 74-69 at home Thursday.
Sydney Hendrix secured a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. In addition to Hendrix's solid outing, the Rattlers (8-15, 5-7) were led by Sabou Gueye, who had 12 points, and by D'Mya Griffin, who tacked on 13 points.
Florida A&M grabbed 26 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Alcorn State's 13, led by Hendrix's 10 boards.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 14-9 advantage, Florida A&M went on a 10-0 run with 4:46 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Eve Alexander, to increase its lead to 24-9, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
The Rattlers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 37-31.
Alcorn State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 39-31 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Griffin, to grab a 40-39 lead with 6:52 to go in the third. Alcorn State responded to seize a 50-47 lead entering the fourth quarter. Florida A&M turned three offensive rebounds into four second chance points on the way to scoring 16 total points in the quarter.
Florida A&M kept the Braves from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Cheyenne McEvans' layup, to seize a 55-52 lead with 8:35 to go in the contest. Alcorn State re-asserted control, outscoring the Rattlers 22-14 the rest of the way to hand Florida A&M the 74-69 loss. Florida A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 22 total points.
