TALLAHASSEE, FL --Cheyenne McEvans, Sabou Gueye and D'Mya Griffin combined to score 42 of Florida A&M's 54 total points, but the Rattlers fell to the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 58-54 at home Saturday.
McEvans led the Rattlers (7-13, 4-5) with 17 points and six rebounds. Gueye added 15 points and Griffin chipped in as well with 10 points and six rebounds.
Led by Sydney Hendrix's five offensive rebounds, Florida A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.
The Florida A&M defense held Alabama A&M shooters to only 36 percent from the field, including 11.1 percent from three-point range. The Bulldogs did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored eight second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-6, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 51 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Zikeyah Carter, to narrow its deficit to 16-11, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
Florida A&M then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Ivet Subirats, to take a 17-16 lead. The Bulldogs then came roaring back to take a 28-26 lead heading into halftime.
Florida A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Rattlers faced a 51-39 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
Florida A&M came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on an 8-0 run, finished off by McEvans' layup, to shrink the deficit to 51-47 with 8:20 to go in the contest. The Rattlers were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 58-54. Florida A&M took advantage of four Alabama A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
