PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Cheyenne McEvans notched a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds to help the Florida A&M women's basketball team knock off the Prairie View A&M Panthers 65-48 on the road Thursday.
In addition to McEvans' solid output, the Rattlers (8-13, 5-5) were led by Sydney Hendrix, who had 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals, and by Saige Glover, who added six points and six rebounds coming off the bench.
Florida A&M grabbed 49 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Prairie View A&M's 22, led by McEvans' 16 boards. The Rattlers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 22 rebounds into 16 second chance points.
The Florida A&M defense held Prairie View A&M shooters to just 30.8 percent from the field, including 28.6 percent from three-point range. The Panthers did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored 10 second chance points while Florida A&M pulled down 27 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
Florida A&M kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 14-12.
Prairie View A&M kept adding to that lead, building a 17-12 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 9-0 run to take a 21-17 lead. The Panthers then came roaring back to take a 30-28 lead heading into halftime.
After intermission, Florida A&M rallied to tie it up at 32-32 before going on a 12-0 run to grab a 44-32 lead with 4:00 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Panthers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Rattlers still entered the fourth quarter with a 49-38 edge. Florida A&M turned four offensive rebounds into six second chance points on the way to scoring 21 total points in the quarter.
Florida A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 60-46 before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 65-46 with 40 seconds to go in the contest. The Panthers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rattlers still cruised the rest of the way for the 65-48 win.
