Florida A&M shoots 50 percent from deep, beats Alabama A&M 95-79

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Florida A&M men's basketball team (8-11, 5-3 SWAC) shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on the way to a 95-79 win against Alabama A&M Saturday (Feb. 1) evening. The wins extended the Rattlers current winning streak to five. 

Five players scored in double figures, led by Milton Matthews, who had 25 points, six rebounds and four assists. Sterling Young tacked on 23 points off the bench and Roderick Coffee III chipped in with 13 points and five assists.

The Rattlers will return to the Al Lawson Center Monday (Feb. 3) in a 7 p.m. match-up against Alabama State. 

How It Happened

After falling behind 13-10, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 13:53 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Young, to take a 15-13 lead. The Rattlers held onto that advantage, heading into halftime with a 34-32 lead, with 18 points coming from beyond the arc. 

Following intermission, the Rattlers continued to widen their lead, expanding it to 78-67 before going on a 12-0 run, finished off by a Shaqir O'Neal three with 2:41 remaining. 

Game Notes

» The Rattlers made half of their attempts from three point range, knocking down 14 of 28 shots.
» Florida A&M never trailed in the second half.
» Florida A&M tallied 17 total assists in the game.
» Milton Matthews and Sterling Young each knocked down five 3-pointers. 
» The Florida A&M bench made an impact by adding 43 points to its scoring output.
» Five Rattlers scored 10 or more points. 
» Sterling Young and Shaqir O'Neal came off the bench to score 23 and 12 points, respectively.
» Florida A&M cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive boards in the game.
» Milton Matthews had a game-high 25 points and Sterling Young added 23.
» Florida A&M also received a team-high six rebounds from Matthews.
