WASHINGTON, D.C. --The Florida A&M women's basketball team got a 27-point performance from the bench, but fell 89-53 to the Howard Bison on the road Saturday.
The Rattlers (0-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Niah Rhodes, who had 16 points. Aina Subirats tacked on 12 points off the bench and Cornelia Ellington added nine points and four steals.
The Florida A&M offense was very productive from downtown, making eight threes on 28 attempts. Subirats was the most prolific shooter for the Rattlers, draining four treys in the contest.
The Florida A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 21 Howard turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Ellington's four steals led the way individually for the Rattlers.
How It Happened
Florida A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 25-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Rattlers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 44-22 halftime deficit.
Howard continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 76-26 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Subirats, to trim its deficit to 76-32 with 20 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Florida A&M knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 10 total points.
Howard kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 84-35 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 17-0 run, finished off by Subirats' three, to shrink the deficit to 84-52 with 2:45 to go in the contest. Howard responded and outscored the Rattlers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 89-53. Florida A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.
