Florida A&M falls to Jackson State 73-62

JACKSON, MS -- The Florida A&M women's basketball team fell 73-62 to Jackson State on the road Thursday. Despite leading 33-31 at halftime, the Rattlers were unable to hold off the Tigers in the second half.

The Rattlers (6-11, 3-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Cheyenne McEvans, who had 16 points and three steals. D'Mya Griffin tacked on 16 points and Saige Glover helped out with 11 points and six rebounds.

Led by Glover's two offensive rebounds, Florida A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.

The Florida A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 16 Jackson State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Sabou Gueye's four steals led the way individually for the Rattlers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 11-9, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 5:21 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Griffin, to take a 14-11 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 20-19.

Jackson State kept adding to that lead, building a 30-20 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Glover, to narrow its deficit to 30-29. The Rattlers kept the rally going and overtook the Tigers on a free throw from Glover with 00:27 left for a 33-31 halftime advantage.

Jackson State then took a 53-40 lead following intermission before Florida A&M went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from McEvans, to trim its deficit to 53-46 with 12 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 13 points in the paint.

Jackson State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-56 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Gueye's layup, to shrink the deficit to 73-62 with 12 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.
