LORMAN, MS -- Florida A&M fell short in overtime, losing 75-72 to Alcorn State on the road Saturday. D'Mya Griffin hit a clutch game-tying 3-pointer with one second left to send the game into the extra period.
The Rattlers (6-12, 3-4) had five players score in double figures, led by Sabou Gueye, who had 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Cheyenne McEvans tacked on 14 points and two steals and D'Mya Griffin helped out with 12 points.
Florida A&M grabbed 38 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Alcorn State's 35, led by ZiKeyah Carter's 10 boards. The Rattlers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 26 second chance points.
Florida A&M forced 23 Alcorn State turnovers. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Gueye's five steals led the way for Florida A&M.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-7, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 2:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Griffin, to take a 12-10 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-12.
Alcorn State kept adding to that lead, building a 28-17 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 10-0 run to narrow its deficit to 28-27. The Rattlers were unable to narrow the gap any further, but did not lose ground either and entered halftime with a 35-34 deficit.
Florida A&M came out of halftime on fire, going on a 7-0 run to grab a 41-35 lead with 6:37 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Braves had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Rattlers still entered the fourth quarter with a 49-46 edge. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
Florida A&M then surrendered that advantage as Alcorn State forced overtime by tying things up at 63-63 by the end of the fourth. Griffin's 3-pointer sent the contest to an extra period with only one second left. Florida A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
Alcorn State then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Florida A&M behind 75-72 at the final buzzer.
