Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rattlers lose their first game since December 1

BATON ROUGE, La. –– The Florida A&M women's basketball team fell to Southern 77-61 Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge. Despite keeping the game close early and playing Southern even through the first quarter at 16-16, the Rattlers could not maintain that momentum as the game progressed.

Ivet Subirats led FAMU with 13 points, including a strong shooting performance from beyond the arc, going 4-of-7 from three-point range. Cheyenne McEvans played all 40 minutes and contributed 12 points, six assists, and three steals, while Sydney Hendrix added 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

The Rattlers struggled to contain Southern's Aniya Gourdine, who finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Southern gradually built their lead throughout the game, outscoring FAMU in the final three quarters (20-13, 22-20, 19-12).

Despite shooting a solid 41.2% from three-point range (7-of-17), FAMU was hampered by 21 turnovers, which Southern converted into 22 points. The Rattlers also had difficulty defending inside, allowing Southern to score 36 points in the paint compared to their own 22.

The loss drops Florida A&M to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Rattlers will travel to Grambling to play the Tigers on Monday night.
