Itta Bena, Miss. (Sept. 29) | The Florida A&M volleyball team (10-5, 2-0 SWAC) went 2-0 in its Southwestern Athletic Conference opening weekend with a 3-2 win at Jackson State and a 3-0 decision at Mississippi Valley State.
Sunday's win (25-24, 25-11, 25-16) at MVSU also marked the Rattlers' fifth sweep of the season. Iyonnie Sanford paced the team's offense in both matches, recording seven kills at Mississippi Valley. Farah Farooq added six.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE | Deadlock at 5-5, Mississippi Valley State pieced together a 5-1 run to jump out to an early lead. The visitors trailed by as many as six but continued to battle, taking the lead at 19-18 on an ace by Farooq. FAMU lost and later regained its advantage on a 7-1 rally that concluded the set.
SET TWO | The second frame was less contentious, with the Rattlers dominating, 25-11. Tinons Galmés highlighted the victory with a service ace that also capped an impressive 8-0 run.
SET THREE | FAMU led from the very first point - a Tamia Coleman kill.
Galmes finished with a match-high 13 digs while
Makenzie Taylor added a team-high 12 assists.
Florida A&M's next five matches will take place inside the Al Lawson Center. The tilt begins with Alabama State this Friday (Oct. 4) at 6 p.m.
