Florida A&M breaks through late tie for 8-5 victory over Southern

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Florida A&M Rattlers broke through after a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning to knock off the Southern Jaguars 8-5 Wednesday.

Junior Cody Williams (3-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Florida A&M (28-25). The right-hander went two innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Senior Caleb Granger started the ballgame and went six innings, surrendering four runs, two earned, on nine hits, walking one and striking out five.

Offensively, the Rattlers were led by senior True Fontenot, who went 4-for-5 on the day with a double and two RBI. Junior Janmikell Bastardo put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Ty Jackson also chipped in for Florida A&M, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Rattlers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Rattlers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Jaguars cut it to 3-1. Florida A&M pushed across a run on Fontenot's two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Rattlers.

Southern came back to even the ballgame at four before Florida A&M reclaimed a 5-4 advantage in the sixth inning.

The Jaguars then tied up the ballgame at five before Florida A&M fought back to reclaim their advantage in the eighth inning. The three-run frame for the Rattlers was punctuated by a two-run homer from Bastardo. bringing the score to 8-5 in favor of Florida A&M. The score remained 8-5 for the rest of the game, as the Rattlers held on for the win.
