Florida A&M never trails in 9-3 win against Alabama State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Florida A&M Rattlers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 9-3 victory over the Alabama State Hornets on Saturday.

Junior Samantha Smith (7-9) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Florida A&M (16-16, 12-3). The right-hander went 4.2 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits.

At the plate, the Rattlers were paced by senior Nyomi Jones, who went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Sophomore Kayla Aldridge put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Aniya Canty also helped out for Florida A&M, putting together two hits in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Rattlers got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Florida A&M picked up a pair of runs in the frame.

The Hornets then tied the ballgame at two before the Rattlers came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. Florida A&M plated two runs off of Alabama State pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Canty, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Rattlers.

Alabama State narrowed Florida A&M's lead to 4-3 before the Rattler stretched the advantage to 9-3 in the sixth inning. The Rattlers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Aldridge. The score remained 9-3 for the rest of the game, as Florida A&M coasted to the win.
