Florida A&M never trails in 6-4 victory over Alabama State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Florida A&M Rattlers took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 6-4 victory against the Alabama State Hornets on Saturday.

Freshman Zoryana Hughes (9-2) got the win for Florida A&M (15-16, 11-3). The right-hander went 6.2 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits, allowing three walks and striking out one.

In the batter's box, the Rattlers were paced by senior Nyah Morgan, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and three RBI. Junior Kiauna Watson compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a triple. Senior Amaya Gainer also helped out for Florida A&M, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Rattlers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Florida A&M's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run flyout off the bat of freshman Aniya Canty.

The Rattlers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Hornets cut it to 4-1. Watson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Florida A&M, which brought the score to 5-1 in favor of the Rattlers.

Alabama State narrowed Florida A&M's lead to 5-2 before the Rattlers stretched the advantage to 6-2 in the sixth inning. The Rattlers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Morgan. Alabama State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Florida A&M still held on for the 6-4 win.
