TALLAHASSEE, FL --Florida A&M got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Rattlers put nine runs on the board and knock off the Alabama State Hornets 9-4 Saturday.
Freshman Carson Kelly (3-1) got the win for Florida A&M (14-17, 9-2). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing three walks and striking out three. Junior Tanner Walker also pitched well, going four innings, surrendering two runs, zero earned, on five hits, walking one and striking out four.
In the batter's box, the Rattlers were paced by junior Janmikell Bastardo, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, a triple and two RBI. Senior Ty Jackson furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Sophomore Broedy Poppell also contributed for Florida A&M, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Jackson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Florida A&M and get them on the board.
The Hornets then scored one run to retake their advantage heading into the fourth inning, when the Rattlers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Florida A&M scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior True Fontenot, which brought the score level at 2-2.
That 2-2 tie turned into a 4-2 Florida A&M lead in the fifth. The Rattlers added two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Bastardo.
Florida A&M held the Hornets scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Rattlers notched two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from Bastardo, bringing the score to 6-2 in favor of Florida A&M.
The Rattlers kept Alabama State scoreless before expanding their lead to 9-2 the following inning. Alabama State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Rattlers still coasted to the 9-4 win.
