TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --The Florida A&M Rattlers took a 6-3 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on and fell 9-7 to the Alabama State Hornets Friday.
Junior Samantha Smith (6-9) started and took the loss in the circle for Florida A&M (14-16, 10-3). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up nine runs, three earned, on nine hits, allowing two walks and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers were trailing 3-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Senior Nyah Morgan drove in two runs for Florida A&M with a single, that scored junior Kiauna Watson and senior Amaya Gainer.
The Rattlers kept the deficit at 3-2 before taking the lead in the third. Florida A&M pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Morgan that scored Gainer and Smith, which brought the Rattlers lead to 4-3.
Florida A&M held Alabama State scoreless before expanding their lead to 6-3 the following inning. The Rattlers added two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Watson.
Florida A&M lost the lead they built in the fourth, but got back on the scoreboard in the sixth trailing 7-6. Watson crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Rattlers, tying the score at 7-7. Alabama State then scored two times over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 9-7 win.
