JACKSON, Miss. --The Florida A&M Rattlers got three hits out of sophomore Broedy Poppell in a 5-3 loss to the Jackson State Tigers Saturday.
Freshman Carson Kelly (5-2) got the ball to start for Florida A&M (21-21, 16-4) and took the loss. Senior Andrew Ginther was a bright spot for the Rattlers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 3.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.
In addition to his three hits, Poppell had a double, a walk and two RBI to lead the Rattlers. Senior Ty Jackson put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with two walks. Freshman Josue Figueroa also chipped in for Florida A&M, putting together zero hits in one trip to the plate while adding three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Florida A&M plated two runs off of Jackson State pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Poppell.
The Tigers then rallied to score four runs and take a 4-2 lead before the Rattlers got back on the board in the fifth. Florida A&M scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Poppell, which tightened the Tigers lead to 4-3. The Rattlers were unable to get any closer, as Jackson State added one run to their tally on the way to a 5-3 final.
