HUNTSVILLE, AL --Junior Samantha Smith recorded two extra base hits to help lead the Florida A&M Rattlers over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 6-3 Saturday.
Freshman Zoryana Hughes got the win out of the bullpen for Florida A&M (6-13, 2-0). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out five.
Smith's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-3 day, and included two doubles, a walk and two RBI. Senior Amaya Gainer put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Sophomore Neriah Lee also chipped in for the Rattlers, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Junior Kiuana Watson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Florida A&M and get them on the board.
The Rattlers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fourth trailing 2-1. Florida A&M scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Smith, which brought the Rattlers lead to 4-2.
Florida A&M held Alabama A&M scoreless before building their lead to 6-2 in the seventh inning. Alabama A&M put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Florida A&M still held on for the 6-3 win.
