TALLAHASSEE, FL --Sydney Hendrix secured a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to help the Florida A&M women's basketball team defeat the Alabama State Hornets 70-66 at home Saturday.
The Rattlers (8-17, 7-7) had three players score in double figures, led by Hendrix, who secured a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Olivia Delancy added 16 points and Ahriahna Grizzle helped out with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Florida A&M out-rebounded Alabama State 43-30 in Saturday's game, led by Hendrix's 11 boards. The Rattlers also grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and scored 16 second chance points.
Florida A&M did a great job disrupting Alabama State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Hendrix's two rejections led the way individually for the Rattlers.
How It Happened
Florida A&M kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 16-15.
Florida A&M chipped away at that deficit and built a 30-29 lead before going on a 6-0 run to increase its lead to 36-29. The Hornets cut into that lead, but the Rattlers still enjoyed a 38-32 advantage heading into halftime. Florida A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 23 points close to the basket.
After intermission, Florida A&M held on to its advantage and owned a 52-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Florida A&M kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Hendrix's jumper, to grow the lead to 61-52 with 6:12 to go in the contest. The Hornets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rattlers still held on for the 70-66 win. Florida A&M took advantage of seven Alabama State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
