TALLAHASSEE, FL --The Florida A&M Rattlers fell 9-8 in a 10-inning matchup to the Eastern Illinois Panthers Sunday.
Senior Josh Scragg (0-0) took the loss on the mound for Florida A&M (2-1). The right-hander went 1.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing no walks and striking out one. Freshman Carson Kelly was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit.
Junior Janmikell Bastardo led the way offensively for the Rattlers, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a triple and an RBI. Freshman Joseph Pierini put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBI. Senior Jalen Niles also helped out, going 2-for-5 for Florida A&M with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Florida A&M picked up a pair of runs in the frame.
The Rattlers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 5-2. Florida A&M pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Pierini that brought home freshman Ben Kim and Bastardo, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the Panthers.
Eastern Illinois built their lead to 7-4 before the Florida A&M offense got going, reducing that lead to 7-6 in the sixth. The Rattlers scored twice, with one run coming across on Kim's single.
The Panthers expanded their lead to 8-6 before the Florida A&M offense got back in gear, evening it up in the ninth. The Rattlers sent in two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Bastardo, evening the score at 8-8. Eastern Illinois then scored one time over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 9-8 win.
