TALLAHASSEE, FL --Ahriahna Grizzle collected 31 points to help lead the Florida A&M women's basketball team over the Texas Southern Tigers 71-57 at home Saturday.
The Rattlers (6-15, 5-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Grizzle, who had 31 points, four assists and five steals. Olivia Delancy tacked on 10 points and three steals and Ivet Subirats added nine points and two steals.
Sydney Hendrix pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Florida A&M, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 20 second chance points.
Florida A&M's defense held Texas Southern to only 38.3 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-7, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 3:30 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Grizzle, to take a 12-10 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 13-12.
Florida A&M kept the Tigers from increasing their lead before going on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Delancy, to take a 24-17 lead. The Rattlers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 31-24 advantage heading into halftime. Florida A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 19 points close to the basket.
Florida A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Grizzle, to expand its lead further to 44-35 with 4:16 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Rattlers added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 52-40 edge. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.
Florida A&M kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Nashani Gilbert's layup, to grow the lead to 65-42 with 5:35 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rattlers still cruised the rest of the way for the 71-57 win. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 19 points in the paint.
