Rattlers fall at Clemson, despite strong first half

CLEMSON, S.C. –– Florida A&M (1-5) was unable to overcome a strong second half by Clemson (7-1), falling 86-58 at Littlejohn Coliseum on Friday night despite a solid first half showing.

The Rattlers kept things competitive early, taking their biggest lead of 5 points at the 6:40 mark of the first half. Roderick Coffee III provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while Milton Matthews added 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting (4-of-10 from three).

After trailing just 38-32 at halftime, FAMU struggled to keep pace as Clemson pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Rattlers 48-26 over the final 20 minutes. Jordan Chatman provided some bright spots late, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and three 3-pointers.

The Rattlers shot 42% overall (23-of-55) and matched Clemson from beyond the arc, hitting 11 threes at a 42% clip. However, they were dominated inside, getting outscored 38-20 in the paint while being outrebounded 41-27.

FAMU's offense struggled to find consistency, managing just one made free throw on six attempts while committing 16 turnovers that led to 15 Clemson points. The Tigers also controlled the transition game, outscoring FAMU 11-0 in fast break points.

The loss marks FAMU's fifth of the season despite showing flashes of potential, particularly in their first-half performance. The Rattlers will look to bounce back and build on the positives as they continue their non-conference schedule when they return home on Tuesday, December 3 at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Matthews (14 points), Coffee (13 points), and Chatman (11 points) led the scoring for FAMU, while Ian Schieffelin collected a game-high 15 rebounds for Clemson. Chase Hunter paced the Tigers with 16 points, followed by Chauncey Wiggins with 15.
