CARROLLTON, GA --The Florida A&M women's basketball team got a 26-point showing from the bench, but fell 65-54 to the West Georgia Wolves on the road Wednesday.
The Rattlers (0-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Sabou Gueye, who had 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Sydney Hendrix added 13 points and eight rebounds and Cheyenne McEvans added nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
McEvans pulled down five offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Florida A&M, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.
Florida A&M's defense held West Georgia to only 38 percent shooting from the field. The Wolves did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points.
How It Happened
Florida A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Florida A&M kept the Wolves from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from D'Mya Griffin, to narrow its deficit to 26-24. West Georgia responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Rattlers trailing 29-24 heading into halftime.
Florida A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Rattlers faced a 47-40 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Florida A&M took advantage of six West Georgia turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
West Georgia kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-40 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Hendrix's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 52-45 with 5:19 to go in the contest. West Georgia responded and outscored the Rattlers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 65-54. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.
