Delancy and Grizzle combine for 50 points in Florida A&M's 80-76 loss to Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, FL --Olivia Delancy totaled 29 points and Ahriahna Grizzle added 21, but the Florida A&M women's basketball team fell to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 80-76 on the road Saturday.

Delancy and Grizzle's stellar scoring performances led the Rattlers (1-11, 0-1) in the contest. Delancy tacked on eight rebounds and two steals and Grizzle added four steals. Nashani Gilbert also helped out with a double double of 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Gilbert pulled down 10 offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Florida A&M, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into 17 second chance points.

Florida A&M forced 17 Bethune-Cookman turnovers. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Grizzle's four steals led the way for Florida A&M.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-5, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 4:13 left in the first quarter to take a 10-9 lead. The Rattlers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 12-11 advantage. Florida A&M did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.

The Rattlers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 35-26.

Bethune-Cookman continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 55-38 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 55-43 with 1:24 to go in the third. Bethune-Cookman countered and stretched its lead to 59-46 heading into the fourth. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.

Florida A&M narrowed its deficit to 67-55 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Delancy's three, to shrink the deficit to 67-63 with 2:41 to go in the contest. The Rattlers were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 80-76. Florida A&M got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring seven fast break points.
