Rattlers secure a 59-53 victory over Southern

TALLAHASSEE, FL --The Florida A&M women's basketball team went into the half tied with Southern 28-28, but took control in the second half to knock off the Jaguars 59-53 at home Saturday.

The Rattlers (2-11, 1-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Olivia Delancy, who had 18 points and eight rebounds. Ahriahna Grizzle tacked on 15 points and two steals and Ivet Subirats helped out with 13 points and two steals.

Florida A&M grabbed 42 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Southern's 22, led by Delancy's eight boards. The Rattlers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 10 second chance points.

Florida A&M forced 18 Southern turnovers. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Subirats' two steals led the way for Florida A&M.

How It Happened

After falling behind 10-6, Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run with 6:00 left in the first quarter to take an 11-10 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 18-14.

Southern kept adding to that lead, building a 28-21 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 28, a score that would hold until halftime. Florida A&M forced seven Southern turnovers in the period and turned them into six points.

After intermission, Southern snatched a 30-28 lead before Florida A&M answered back by going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Subirats, to grab a 35-30 lead with 6:16 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Rattlers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 44-38 edge. Florida A&M took advantage of seven Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.

The Rattlers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Florida A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 15 total points.
