TALLAHASSEE, FL --The Florida A&M women's basketball team earned a 60-56 win over the Alcorn State Braves at home Saturday.
The Rattlers (4-13, 3-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Ahriahna Grizzle, who had 18 points, four assists, four steals and two blocks. Olivia Delancy tacked on 14 points and two steals off the bench and Nashani Gilbert added five points and two steals.
Led by Gilbert's two offensive rebounds, Florida A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in seven second chance points.
Florida A&M forced 22 Alcorn State turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Saturday's game. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 28 points on the offensive end of the floor. Grizzle's four steals led the way for Florida A&M.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-7, Florida A&M went on a 7-0 run with 2:49 left in the first quarter to take a 14-12 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-14.
The Rattlers and Braves then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 29-27 in favor of Alcorn State.
Alcorn State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 36-31 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Peryonna Sylvester, to tie things up at 36 with 5:12 to go in the third. The Rattlers moved ahead of the Braves and grabbed a 47-42 lead heading to the fourth. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.
Alcorn State proceeded to take a 54-50 lead before Florida A&M went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Sylvester's layup, to seize a 58-54 lead with 1:08 to go in the contest. The Rattlers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 60-56 win. Florida A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 13 points.
