TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Senior Melkayla Irvis collected four RBIs to help propel the Florida A&M Rattlers over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes 9-2 on Saturday.
Sophomore Lauryn Peppers (4-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Florida A&M (14-14, 7-4). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing three walks and striking out seven.
Irvis went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a walk in addition to her four RBIs for the Rattlers. Senior Jania Davis furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Kiauna Watson also helped out for Florida A&M, putting together zero hits in one trip to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Florida A&M put up two runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Irvis.
The Rattlers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Delta Devilettes cut it to 2-1. Florida A&M scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Destiny Cuevas, which brought the Rattlers lead to 3-1.
Mississippi Valley State narrowed Florida A&M's lead to 3-2 before the Rattlers stretched the advantage to 8-2 in the fourth inning. The Rattlers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run double off the bat of Irvis.
Florida A&M held the Delta Devilettes scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. Senior Jane'a Mobley crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Rattlers, bringing the score to 9-2 in favor of Florida A&M. The score remained 9-2 for the rest of the game, as the Rattlers coasted to the win.
