Florida A&M scores 33 points off of turnovers in 71-68 loss to UAPB

TALLAHASSEE, FL --The Florida A&M women's basketball team scored 33 points off of turnovers, but fell 71-68 to the UAPB Lady Lions at home Saturday.

The Rattlers (2-13, 0-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Dylan Horton, who had 21 points and two steals. Mide Oriyomi tacked on 19 points, five steals and two blocks from the bench and Ivet Subirats added nine points, six assists and five steals.

Paulla Weekes pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Florida A&M, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.

Florida A&M forced 32 UAPB turnovers while committing 26 themselves in Saturday's game. The Rattlers turned those takeaways into 33 points on the offensive end of the floor. Ahriahna Grizzle led the way individually with seven steals.

How It Happened

Florida A&M started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run to take an early lead with 8:32 left in the first quarter. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 18-13.

UAPB kept adding to that lead, building a 33-21 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 7-0 run to narrow its deficit to 33-28. The Rattlers continued to chip away, reducing the UAPB lead to 37-34 heading into the break.

UAPB continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 40-34 advantage before Florida A&M went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Horton, to grab a 42-40 lead with 6:08 to go in the third. UAPB responded to seize a 57-50 lead entering the fourth quarter. Florida A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 10 of the team's 16 third-quarter points.

Florida A&M narrowed its deficit to 67-61 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Horton's three, to shrink the deficit to 67-66 with 1:20 to go in the contest. UAPB responded and outscored the Rattlers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-68. Florida A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
