Florida A&M gets first SWAC win in 69-53 victory over Mississippi Valley State

TALLAHASSEE, FL --The Florida A&M women's basketball team scored 30 points off of turnovers on the way to a 69-53 win against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes at home Monday.

The Rattlers (3-13, 1-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Dylan Horton, who had 19 points, four assists and seven steals. Mide Oriyomi tacked on 18 points and two steals off the bench and Eliya Ellis added five points, two steals and two blocks.

Florida A&M grabbed 44 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Mississippi Valley State's 39, led by seven boards from Caylan Jones. The Rattlers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 19 rebounds into 14 second chance points.

The Florida A&M defense held Mississippi Valley State shooters to just 35.6 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After playing to a 3-3 tie early in the game, Florida A&M went on an 11-0 run with 8:02 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Oriyomi, to take a 14-3 lead. The Rattlers then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 28-9 advantage. Florida A&M did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 28 points close to the basket.

Florida A&M kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 6:25 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Jones, to increase its lead to 38-16. The Delta Devilettes cut into that lead, but the Rattlers still enjoyed a 38-21 advantage heading into halftime. Florida A&M forced 10 Mississippi Valley State turnovers in the period and turned them into seven points.

Florida A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Staysha Allen, to expand its lead further to 57-36 with 22 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Florida A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team's 19 third-quarter points.

Florida A&M started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Jones' layup, to grow the lead to 63-36 with 8:41 to go in the contest. The Delta Devilettes narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rattlers still cruised the rest of the way for the 69-53 win. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
