Rattler Volleyball Unable to Secure Home-Opening Wins

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | In its first home matches of the 2022 season, the Florida A&M volleyball team welcomed Yale and Austin Peay to the Al Lawson Center on Friday (Sept. 2). The noon opener against the Bulldogs resulted in a 3-1 setback and the APSU closer was a 3-2 nail-bitter.

Florida A&M vs. Yale (28-26, 23-25, 15-25, 13-25)
There was no shortage of action in the opening sets, as Yale and Florida A&M competed through the very last points. The Rattlers struck first to pull out to a 15-13 lead, and eight ties followed. Error was met by error, kill by kill, and the Rattlers were finally able to claim set one with a 3-0 rally capped by Dominique Washington's solo block.

The team kicked off the second stanza with three quick points but trailed shortly thereafter when the Bulldogs pieced together a rally of their own. The two battled for positioning, as evidenced by the two lead changes; however, FAMU's final advantage sat at 12-11. The score remained within a three-point swing the rest of the way, and Washington and Aja Jones contributed a kill each with Yale parked at set point. The former finished with a team-high 11 with eight digs, while Brooke Lynn Watts added eight kills.

Florida A&M vs. Austin Peay (20-25, 25-19, 15-25, 30-28, 12-15)
The Rattlers returned to the Al Lawson Center for an evening thriller -- their first five-set match of the season -- against Austin Peay. The home side pushed for the final frame after defeating the Governors,  30-28, in the fourth. Picking up midway through, back-to-back-to-back scoring sprees, 5-0 for FAMU, 6-0 for APSU, and 5-1 for FAMU, concluded in a 21-all tie. Jones and Isis Williams thwarted the visitor's best chance to secure the set, respectively contributing a kill and solo block, and the Rattlers posted the final three points for the 30-28 win. It marked the most points FAMU has recorded in a single set this season and its second extra-point win of the day.

The Governors opened the fifth with a 6-2 lead and never looked back.

Jacobs recorded a team-high 12 kills, and Washington finished with a double-double on 11 kills and 11 digs. With her sixth straight match of 10-plus digs, Brooke Hudson posted 15 versus the Bulldogs and a game-high 21 in the Friday finale.
