FAMU Drops Season-Opener in Kansas

MANHATTAN, Kan. | The Florida A&M volleyball team opened its season with a two-match appearance in the Kansas State Invitational Friday (August 26), dropping a pair of matches to NC State and Sam Houston State.

NC State 3, Florida A&M 0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-17)

The Rattlers' day began with a straight set loss to the Wolfpack, where it posted a .000 hitting percentage and was outperformed 40-23 in kills. Brooke Lynn Watts guided FAMU with a team-high six kills, while Aja Jones added six and Dominique Washington five. Nina Sharpton finished with her first Rattler double-double on 19 assists and 13 digs.

Errors proved to be the difference maker of the opening set. FAMU notched 11 in that frame alone, and they assisted NC State to several scoring spells, including a 9-2 run to finish the frame. The Wolfpack never trailed in set one, but limiting its miscues, FAMU narrowed the gap in the following two stanzas.

The Green and Orange managed an 11-9 advantage in the early goings of the second before trading rallies with its opponent. There were seven ties in the set; the final, 11-all, occurred amid a 5-0 NC State run that pulled the team ahead for good. State also held a slight edge in the final set, and while FAMU quickly evened the score at 9-9, it never regained the upper hand.

Sam Houston State 3, Florida A&M 1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 27-25)

The Rattlers were eying the wrong side of a 21-11 score in the first set, before mounting a stellar 10-1 run. The impressive stretch featured kills by Emerald Jacobs, Jasmine Robinson, and Washington, but unfortunately resulted in a 25-22 setback. The second frame was more evenly played and favored the Rattlers, 25-20, with the help of a late scoring spurt where Brooke Hudson notched back-to-back service aces in the 7-2 run that cemented the final.

Fast forwarding to the fourth set, FAMU was on the edge of pushing for another. The nail-biting finale required extra points.

Dominique Washington posted 22 kills and 10 digs, and Watts added nine kills and five digs.

Florida A&M wraps its time in Kansas Saturday (August 27) with a 1:30 p.m. ET match against the host, K-State.
