Reigning SWAC Champs Impress in Exhibition Win

8/19/2022 3:36:00 PM

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Florida A&M volleyball team played host to West Florida in a Friday (August 19) exhibition, and the 3-2 victory points to a promising 2022 season.

Florida A&M 3, West Florida 2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-12)

UWF managed a sizeable lead for most of the opening set until a kill by newcomer Aja Jones shifted momentum. The score marked the first of four unanswered points and an eventual 18-16 FAMU advantage that it would sustain the rest of the way. The 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference Player and Newcomer of the Year Dominique Washington closed the door on set one, 25-23, and continued to attack with the first point of the ensuing frame. She finished the exhibition with a double-double on a game-high 21 kills to go alongside 12 digs.

Matching point for point in a second set that featured nine ties, the final sat at 14-all and was followed by an 8-2 run from West Florida. The visitors walked away with a 25-22 win; however, Brooke Lyn Watts made things interesting with a kill that pulled her team within two (24-22). The third stanza ran more or less the same, except this time around, FAMU earned the set win. The Argonauts overpowered their opponent 25-19 in the next, but the Rattlers never trailed in the fifth to defend their home court.

Watts' debut included 15 kills and nine digs, while Jones added six kills and three solo blocks.

Florida A&M officially opens its 2022 season next week with a two-day appearance in the Kansas State Tournament. It meets North Carolina State and Sam Houston Friday, before taking on the host Saturday.
