Rattlers Tame Feline Foes; Still Undefeated

BATON ROUGE, La. | Southern and Texas Southern didn't stand a chance Sunday (Oct. 30), as the scorching hot Florida A&M volleyball team remained undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference competition with respective 3-0 and 3-1 victories.

In the decisions, the team improved to 11-0 in conference play and has won 23 straight matches over SWAC opponents.

FAMU 3, SU 0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-14)
It was a tight finish in the opening set, and the Rattlers nearly ran out of gas. The team led Southern the entire frame until a late 4-0 run allowed the home side to pull ahead for its first lead at 20-18. The Jaguars were a point away from a set win when Irem Ucar found Aja Jones for the 24-all tie, and Emerald Jacobs concluded things with her second service ace.

The Rattlers kicked off the remaining sets with a pair of 12-5 advantages and cruised. Dominique Washington finished with a game-high 12 kills and 13 digs.

FAMU 3, TSU 1 (25-13, 17-25, 25-12, 27-25)

The Rattlers limited Texas Southern to just three kills and a -.069 hitting percentage in the opening set, but the Tigers rebounded nicely to take the second. Florida A&M had won 13 straight sets before the 25-17 setback, which also marked just the second dropped set in SWAC play this season.

The Rattlers never trailed in the third and had the crowd inside Seymour Gymnasium on pins and needles in the fourth, where TSU led most of the way. Three straight kills brought the score to 23-21 and forced a TSU timeout, and a 4-0 run lifted FAMU ahead 25-24. The final tie occurred at 25-all, and Washington ended the stalemate with her sixth and final kill of the day. The graduate student then closed the match with a game-ending block.

Emerald Jacobs recorded a team-high 11 kills while Brooke Hudson added a game-high 22 digs.

The Rattlers wrap action in the second SWAC cluster Monday in a 10 a.m. ET meeting with Alcorn State.
