Washington Excites In Day One of FGCU Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. | The Florida A&M volleyball team took to Alico Arena Friday (Sept. 3), where it split results against Florida International and USC Upstate in the opening matches of the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic. Tournament play began with a 3-1 setback against the former before day one concluded in a 3-0 success over the latter.

All three of FAMU's wins this season have been the result of sweeps.

vs. Florida International (26-24, 21-25, 22-25, 18-25)

It took four sets to settle the final score versus FIU, and the first fell in favor of the Orange and Green, 26-24. Sixteen ties and seven lead changes highlighted the back-and-forth set, and back-to-back kills by Dominique Washington closed the door. The junior outside hitter finished the match with a game-high 29 kills -- contributing more than half of the team's offense (47 total kills) -- while adding 16 digs.

The Rattlers erased an early nine-point disadvantage in set two to close the gap at 19-16 but ultimately dropped the stanza, 25-22. Neither team pulled ahead by more than three points in the ensuing set until a 7-0 FAMU rally helped the visitors to a 15-10 edge. The stretch was met by an 8-1 run by FIU and it maintained its lead from there.

Jessa Long and Mariana Donado Yepes also finished in double-figures with 18 and 12 digs, respectively, while Kaila Todd recorded four blocks.

vs. USC Upstate (25-20, 25-20, 25-17)

Florida A&M rebounded from its earlier appearance with a sweep over USC Upstate. The Rattlers struck first in all three sets, and their offense was again guided by Washington, who posted a game-high 17 kills. The match carried plenty of excitement, but none more so than the 12-0 FAMU run that secured the win in the third and final set.

Emerald Jacobs also added 10 kills, and both recorded a double-double with 14 and 11 digs, respectively.

FAMU returns to action Saturday with a 3 p.m. matchup against the tournament host Florida Gulf Coast.
