Game Recap: Volleyball |

Rattlers upset Auburn en route to a perfect day

AUBURN, Ala. | The Florida A&M volleyball team left Auburn Arena with a pair of Ws Friday (Sept. 18) -- the first handed the tournament host its first loss of the season while the second underlined FAMU's fourth sweep. All in all, it was a perfect day for the Orange and Green in a 3-2 win over Auburn and straight-set decision over Belmont.

vs. Auburn (23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 15-11)

The Tigers possessed an unblemished 6-0 record prior to FAMU's arrival, with five matches determined in three sets. Friday's meeting went the distance, in what could best be characterized as an afternoon of runs.

FAMU commanded the scoreboard most of set one, with three separate three-point leads, and later held a 20-18 advantage until the Tigers clawed their way into a tie. The final stretch featured 20-20 and 22-22 stalemates before concluding in favor of the home side, 25-23. Similar to the first, the next two sets weren't settled until the last few points, but it was the fourth frame that truly set FAMU apart. On the brink of defeat, 11 unanswered points -- a collection of 4-0, 3-0, and 4-0 runs -- helped FAMU to a 25-21 edge and it carried that momentum into the final stanza.

With Dominique Turner at the line to serve, the Rattlers notched six straight points and never looked back.

Dominique Washington poured in 28 kills, 17 digs, and a pair of assisted blocks and was joined in the double-double club by Emerald Jacobs, who added 11 kills, just as many digs, and two solo blocks.

vs. Belmont (26-24, 25-19, 25-19)

The first set may have required extra points, but the second and third were decided handily. The Bruins trailed all of set two and took the first point of the third before eyeing a 9-5 disadvantage.

Jacobs contributed a game-high 16 kills while Jessa Long added 22 digs. Irem Ucar also finished the day with a combined 93 assists.

Non-conference play concludes Saturday in a 12:30 p.m. matchup versus Nicholls State.
